The Wind Waker HD is a high quality experience that will keep you entertained for hours to come. The game has a fairly simple storyline, You play as a young boy who is trying to save his sister who has been kidnapped by a huge bird, on paper it sounds rather bland but the game's storyline is actually very emotional, it pulls on your heartstrings and shows a more human side rarely seen in video games, The graphics are also exceptional which is certainly a nice break from the usual, gritty, realistic graphics games that come out normally. The game uses a "cel-shaded" graphics style meaning it looks like a cartoon. During the first few minutes of gameplay I was gasping in awe at how incredible this game looked, I certainly wish more games would adopt an art style like this. But moving onto the story a bit more, after your character(you can name him whatever you like) fails to save his sister on his first attempt he finds out that he must travel across the great sea to gain the power to defeat the monster trapping her, during your adventures you have to go into different dungeons and along the way gain new items which thankfully are very easy to use. I will not detail each dungeon now but I will tell you that they are all an absolute joy to play through each offering it's own exclusive quirk that makes it unique. To travel through the game you sail on a boat and while this may sound fun it is a bit of a disappointment. The boat simply put does not move very fast and you find yourself having to change the wind direction often to get to your location. To somewhat remedy this there is an opportunity to get a special sail called "the swift sail" which changes wind direction for you and goes much faster however this is optional and not given to the player automatically meaning many will miss out. The original game also flawed near the end: At the end of the game you would have to collect eight pieces of the "triforce". This involved getting 8 triforce charts then tracking down the pieces and using a hook to get them from under the deep sea. In addition after finding the charts you would have to pay a lot of in-game money to get the charts deciphered so you can read them. This was a very tedious part of the game that some players said put them off finishing and developers admitted was tedious and boring. In order to try and rectify this in this HD remake the number of charts has been reduced to 3 meaning it is easier and costs less in-game money however the quest is still tedious. You still have to sail across the ocean and use the hook to get the pieces and you still have to find the charts and get them deciphered. I believe Nintendo missed an opportunity here, I personally would have preferred if there were just 3 pieces to find and no charts at all or cut out the quest altogether. Though the quest is certainly easier it is still tedious. However this is one of very few shortcomings with this game. The graphics are beautiful the gameplay is flawless the story is emotional to a point often not explored in the medium and so I believe this game is an essential purchase for any Wii U owner. It is in my opinion the best game out for the Wii U at this time of writing (11/11/13).
