Age of Mythology
This is an empire building computer game. If you want you do get to kill lots of things but in a tactical rather than a gory way, you can concentrate more on creating things if you'd rather. I bought this for my son's birthday for. He, his brother (13) and sister (11) have spent hours playing it over the last 4 months and they've by no means finished it. They often play it together, discussing tactics sharing information and NOT arguing - they've never got on so well. They've learnt a lot of mythology along the way and quite a lot of other incidental information, some of which may come in useful in life, and some of which is about llamas. In short it's a computer game with some educational benefit but one that promotes collaboration and family harmony so I get to do the crossword in peace....
