The Lego video games have been around for a while now, so while it's no surprise to see the biggest book-to-film franchise being given a Lego approach; it is surprising to see how original this new installment really is. Previous titles such as Indiana Jones and Star Wars really didn't offer huge amounts in terms of variety. Limited force powers and swinging across gaps became tiresome very quickly and meant constantly changing characters. This time around, players are offered the ability to use different powers via one character, but as the title suggests, you progress through Harry's first four years, so you aren't given free reign with all of his wizarding powers the second you pick up your controller.
Of course other characters are still invaluable; Goblins are the only ones able to open specific locks and you'll have to use dark wizards such as Voldemort to interact with particular objects, so you'll still find yourself changing between house elves, animals and ghosts throughout the game.
Despite this fresh new approach, the game still craves that "break what you can find" attitude in certain areas, smashing things to gather studs and buy unlock-able characters or funny cheats to enlarge heads. It definitely lengthens the playing time, but it can get repetitive and, inevitably, boring.
Still, all in all, Lego Harry Potter is a great game; it's different, refreshing and smart where it should be. It is what it's mean to be; magical.

Fans of Harry Potter movies and lego games will absolutely love this game. The gameplay is based on the first four films and is brought to life using lego characters and building bricks.. The major letdown on this title is the WELL DOCUMENTED glitches that the makers know about and have done nothing to fix. It is impossible to obtain ALL trophies as one of the locations in the game is unreachable (the bank).. which means you cannot complete the game.... a pity really because if the game had been patched i would be rating this game now as excellent rather than just good...

Another Lego gaming success. Building (sorry) on the stud collecting genius of Lego Star Wars, Batman and Indiana Jones, Lego Harry Potter uses a mould that has so far proved to be far from breaking. Play as many of the first four films characters as you spell cast, battle and wand wave your way around colourful and cleverly built destructible levels. Unlock trophies, special blocks and skills as you go and collect studs to use in the shops to buy that elusive 100%. A great game for all ages, fans of the film or not, can't wait for the next instalment.
