Pokemon Pearl

You might not see the supporting merchandise so much nowadays but Pokemon is still the most successful games franchise in history. Diamond and Pearl sold 5 million copies in Japan in under three months and 1 million in America in just one month, breaking all records for the year and the series. At first sight though this looks disappointingly similar to the existing games, with only a subtle 3D effect for the game world and largely static 2D battles. However the gameplay has undergone a complete overhaul, adding numerous new features and reintroducing others from Gold/Silver/Crystal, that had previously been removed. The basics are still the same though, as you venture out into the world (called Sinnoh this time) in an attempt to catalogue each and every pokemon and battle the evil Team Galactic....

Pokemon have been around for years and since the very first titles were available for the Nintendo Game Boy, the game has not really changed at all.

You are a young boy (or girl) who goes on a quest to try and collect all the Pokemon available in the 'Sinnoh' region.

Along the way you have to battle the evil 'Team Galatic' and try and collect the eight gym badges needed to enter the Pokemon League.

The game features online play, which allows you to play against friends, and even talk to them while doing so with the Nintendo DS's built-in microphone.

You can also go online and trade pokemon with the rest of the world!

The game has an extremely long life-span, and you can even transfer your pokemon from the GBA titles, 'Fire Red' and 'Leaf Green' onto your copy of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl by using the new pal park feature.

The game is great for newcomers and fans alike, but it does ask the question; "Does Pokemon need a new story line, or not?"

    8/10

When Pokemon Diamond/Pearl came out in England I wasn't sure whether to buy it as i had most of it's prequels but when I did purchase it, I was so glad that I had changed my mind. The world of Sinnoh is even better than Pokemon's previous worlds with new places, people and Pokemon all waiting to be challenged. Not only does Diamond/Pearl have a new competition town but they also have included new Pokemon including 'Mime JR'. This is definitely a must-buy from the best gaming series in Nintendo's history.
