    Uncharted- Game Review

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was one of the earlier titles for the PS3 and one that helped to sell it as one of the best consoles out there. This game was a new benchmark for what every game should achieve: gorgeous graphics, stellar gameplay with a action-movie storyline complete with witty heroes and monstrous bad-guys. This was the first game to come even close to realising the dream of a game playing and feeling like a movie: in a word this game is superb.

Set on a remote island filled with mystery and intrigue our protagonist Nathan Drake is on the trail of the revelled treasure of El Dorado and following in his ancestor Sir Francis Drake's footsteps. Accompanied by a wise cracking elder companion "Sully" and obvious love-interest "Elena" the cast is brilliantly voiced and acted providing a realistic and believable story that is fittingly summer-blockbuster like. With dastardly pirates constantly on the trail of our plane-crashing tomb-wrecking heroes this is truly a light hearted romp that will keep any player amused and occupied for the relatively short 8 hour play time.

The gameplay is mainly a combination of 3d platforming and shooting all from a third person perspective. The platforming has several excellent set pieces and the third-person shooting is very much like the popular "Gears of War" for the Xbox 360. Cover-taking is smooth and slick and the shooting is accurate and fun; with Call of Duty like damage where the screen turns a bloody red when hit and returns to normal after taking cover for a few seconds. However one of this game's problems is it's lack of variety. There are probably only about six different guns in the entire game and indeed only about ten different types of enemies. This does begin to get repetitive and slightly boring but is not a deal-breaker for me. There is also a survivalist element to this game as you pick up fallen enemies' weapons and ammo and never have more than two full magazines; this introduces a constant feeling of tension and excitement that is carried through the entire game.

The platforming is very reminiscent of the Tomb-raider games, calculating the angles of jumps, climbing up walls using small ledges and indeed some rudimentary puzzle solving all add up to please any platforming/tomb-raider fan. Some variety is also introduced to the gameplay by vehicular sections: including a jeep where you control the mounted gun and jet ski where you have to dodge explosive barrels whilst shooting down enemies. Variety is also introduced by the collection of treasures, with 60 in total they are cunningly hidden by developer Naughty Dog and add another element of gameplay that is refreshing.

The graphics in this game are gorgeous, often you will simply stop to admire them. Water is incredibly realistic, seeing Drake get out of the water and his clothes actually stay wet and gradually dry is amazing. Every scene looks beautiful and realistic and I cant help be astounded at every level of the game; destructible cover, beautiful architecture and all character models being wonderfully crafted and as I have already mentioned superbly acted, makes this game a stand out blockbuster.

Overall this game is a gorgeous summer-blockbuster that aims to stun and amaze whilst making you chuckle at the same time; the story has an interesting twist that wasn't really to my liking but certainly came as a surprise. With platforming ala Tomb-raider and shooting ala Gears of War this game has pulled the best bits from other genres and combined them into one excellent game. Although it does suffer from repetition in enemies and guns, it tries to introduce variety through vehicles and treasure collection; all of this whilst looking absolutely beautiful. A must buy for any PS3 owner.

This game is the best exclusive on the ps3 hands down. The storyline to this game seems ordinary - finding treasure, fighting pirates, getting the girl - but it turns out to be great although I would have liked to had more boss fights, it will still draw you in. The grapics of the characters and the jungle itself are more than breath taking and probably is one of the best things about this game. I loved the actual fighting in this game weather shooting or brawling with punches and kicks, it seems so smooth. Considering this game has gone platinum it will be the best game you buy on the ps3 just for it's cheapness. All in all I think naughty dog have done great with this game and I most certainly would like to see a second one. Thumbs up, five stars, 10 out of 10, Brilliant game.
