Metal Gear Rising Revengeance

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance for XBox 360 and PS3 is set in 2018; four years after events that took place in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The story stars the well-known, ever popular character Raiden; a cyborg ninja who first appeared in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and who reappeared as a non-playable character in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3).

Raiden is a member of a peace-keeping PMC (Private Military and Security Company) called Maverick Securities who now has to fight against a rival PMC which is involved in terrorist activities (Desperado Enterprises). The gameplay focuses on Raiden's speed, stealth, agility and gymnastic skill which he will need to bring into play as he stalks his evil enemies before closing in on them. This action orientated game also features sword-fighting including a new sophisticated cutting system which allows Raiden to engage in melee combat and gives him the opportunity to slash and slice objects and enemies whenever necessary. The game also features a new combative element called zan-datsu which allows Raiden to prey on his adversaries; cutting through them in order to gain weapons, useful items, information and energy.

Returning to centre stage after first appearing in 2001's Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Raiden is our hero for the latest instalment in the franchise - Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Sons of Liberty is by far one of my favourite in the series' many games to date, so I was really, really looking forward to playing as Raiden in Revengeance once more.

The scene is set four years after Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The not-too-distant future has transformed the face of the world as we know it. You play as Raiden, a cyborg ninja working for Maverick Enterprises as part of the war against Desperado, a private militia working to infiltrate the American political system.

The game serves up not only action aplenty on a silver platter, but also intelligent gameplay in the form of a political thriller. And to top it all off, you enjoy all the futuristic technology you'd expect from the game, including an Artificial Intelligence dog, robots that you're able to control, and much more.

The relatively young Platinum Games developers continue to prove themselves an impressive new talent in the industry, taking over the creative controls here from Kojima Productions back in 2011. Fast forward just a year and a half, and we've been given a fantastic action-thriller to really take hold of and run with.

The game doesn't mess around. It knows what we want, and it delivers. The campaign is very tightly crafted, letting you take control of a fast-paced combat. You're led towards major boss fights in regular intervals, frequently giving you genuine challenges that let you rise to the task. It makes for a sheer fantastic level of fun, long-awaited for fans of the franchise.

One of the things that makes Revengeance so good is that it caters to the tastes of everyone, whether they are a newcomer to the franchise or die-hard veterans. They have momentary nods to fan-favourite characters that the veterans will recognise and love, and they have all-out action that anyone and everyone can enjoy.

After defeating enough enemy cyborgs, you can enter what is aptly titled, 'Blade Mode'. Time slows down, and with exact precision, you are given the opportunity to maim and slay your enemies down to a T. If you want to take an arm, you take an arm. A leg, a leg. Decapitation - not a problem, either. It is exceptional - a brilliant design, and a tremendous amount of fun.

If this is your first entry into the Metal Gear Solid franchise, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a fantastic way to start. It is filled with brutally devastating action, moments of comedy, and a solid backbone of a story to follow right up to the final moments. And all of that adds to an excellent repeat-replay factor, that will make you want to pick it up once more as soon as you finish the gameplay. You really can't get enough of this game. Raiden is an immense and intense hero, worthy of your time, appreciation, and enjoyment. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a true delight, and a real joy to discover.
