Doras Big Birthday Adventure

Dora the Explorer is back again (Nintendo DS and Wii) in a fun-packed adventure-game for pre-school children. Dora is a young bilingual girl, speaking both English and Spanish, and is a well known fictional character from children's TV (Nickelodeon), books and other merchandise. Through her escapades she solves problems using simple Spanish phrases, thereby encouraging the young viewers to learn the language effortlessly. Children are thus able to learn how to count in Spanish, how to speak simple Spanish conversational phrases at the same time as using logic, maths and music to solve problems.

In "Dora's Big Birthday Adventure", Dora is about to be 10 (diez!) and wants to have a party. However she and her pet monkey (Boots) are trapped in Storybook land. To make it back in time for her party she has to travel, with a crystal, to the Wishing Wizzle so she can wish herself home. Along the way, though, she encounters many hazards which have to be overcome, such as a giant sea snake, a mean witch, dancing trees and flying monkeys. The game player has to help Dora and Boots by working through a set of challenges using many basic Early Learning skills including observation, multiple choice responses, word repetition, choice, colour recognition, counting etc., while the concept of speaking a foreign language is introduced.

It has long been recognised that children who obtain language skills before they reach the age of 7 are more likely to be successful in languages later in life. For the young children who play this game, however, it is all about enjoyment, excitement and fun. Adios!
