It's not often that we get to see a horror game released on a handheld console, and so it's with open arms that I welcome Resident Evil: Revelations. It's by far the best game that I've played on the 3DS so far, and has already been met with a fantastic response from fans of the Resident Evil franchise as well as critics across the board.

Revelations is set between the fourth and fifth games that we've had already, and is largely divided into two different styles within the single player mode that complement each other very well.

The first is set aboard a ship, the SS Queen Zenobia, and it's here that we get some of the scariest moments of the game. You might not think that something can be scary on a handheld console, but I can assure you that Revelations handles it with brilliance, and if you didn't have to use both hands to keep on playing, you'd be reaching for a cushion to peek from behind and see when it's safe to look again. The second style that we get to play is akin to the standard action shoot-'em-ups, in which you're travelling across mountains and trying to survive in the midst of having wolves (naturally those infected with the virus) all around to fend off, and it makes for a lot of fun.

Getting two different components to the main story mode was an excellent decision, even more so with the fact that the game delves away from many like it to give us limited ammo, which heavily involves you in the game by forcing you to think about every bullet you fire - will you still have enough to survive until you find more?

What's more, the developers have even added extra missions should you wish to take them that will unlock more features for you to enjoy, like new and even more awesome weapons. And let's face it, we all know that Resident Evil is in part very much about the weapons.

With enough levels to keep you busy for a long time, and plenty of extra missions to go through beyond that too, Revelations is certainly a game well worth buying regardless of whether you're a fan of the Resident Evil games and/or films. For the very reason alone that it's one of a very small number of horror games released on the 3DS, it will be a lot of fun to try out just for something different. It's one of the most interesting and riveting games that I've played in a long time, and I'm already looking forward to the next two Resident Evil games that we'll be getting this year, alongside the fifth film come September. It's a good year to be a Resident Evil fan!
