Less than 9 months after the first Marvel vs Capcom 3, Capcom have released a new version. Of course, this comes as no surprise to many that are familiar with the way Capcom make their money. However, if you are a fan of fighting games, and didn't pick up the original MVC3, then this is a great choice for you at a fantastic bargain price.
This instalment of the MVC series follows the same formula as the rest, with two teams of three fighters each pitted against each other. The character on the screen can, at will, swap out with either of the other two characters in their team or just get some assistance from them. Teams can be comprised from any of the 48 (50 including DLC) characters from both the Marvel and Capcom universes. The fast paced fighting seems to favour the speed and special moves rather than perfectly timed button presses. This approach makes the game very easy to pick up and play for beginners to the genre, but also immensely deep and fulfilling for those willing to spend more time learning how each of the 48/50 characters works. Also included is a "simple" control scheme which makes the game even easier to play and have fun with for gamers not used to the sometimes complex controls used in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. Moreover, the controls themselves feel very responsive, which is an important aspect of a fighting game with such speed involved. In all of my hours of playing, I have never felt as though my input from the controller was not reflected in the on-screen action.
Gameplay is obviously the highlight of any fighting game, and UMVC3 does not disappoint. Included in the general fighting are the aforementioned special attacks that light up the screen with a dazzling display of colour and sound! Also you have access to "hyper" attacks that can be performed by one or all members of a team, but only if you have built up enough "hyper meter" from landing attacks on the opponents. Each characters special moves and hyper attacks are unique to them, so it is great fun trying to find the right combination of characters to suit your style of play!
Unsurprisingly, Ultimate Marvel v Capcom 3 does not really feature much of a storyline at all during the main mode "arcade". Once the arcade mode has been completed with a certain character, you are treated to a very short slide-show of pictures accompanied with a few words to explain the aftermath of the end of the game. This lack of story did annoy me somewhat as I am used to a good narrative to accompany on-screen action in fighting games such as Mortal Kombat. However, UMVC3 does include several other modes that extend the experience. There is a mission mode that gives you challenges to complete with certain characters and all of the online features to keep you busy. Having not played much in online matches so far, I cannot really recommend it as of yet. However, if you do have access to Xbox Live, or PSN, do download the free DLC entitled Heroes and Heralds mode. This DLC is very unique and really adds to the longevity of the game. In it, you are tasked with picking a side and forming a deck of 3 cards that can change specific rules of battle, including altering your attack damage and increasing your movement speed. Not only this, but you are able to fight in increasingly difficult matches against online and offline opponents to build your deck and "take over" a stage in the game. Based on the wealth of features this DLC adds to the already amazing game, I would thoroughly recommend downloading it.
As expected of Capcom, the sounds and graphics of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 are absolutely phenomenal. The designers really managed to capture that "comic-book feel" in the games character and menu design. While I cannot stress enough how amazing the art style and graphics are, I was a bit disappointed with the confusing menu design. I cannot see the menu being very accessible to new-comers to the series or fighting games in general because of the amount of information displayed on the screen at one time. However, this is a minor gripe that will not affect the overall enjoyment of the game once you get used to it.
    Pros:
+ Great fast-paced gameplay that is easy to pick up
+ Fantastic art design and graphics
    + Large cast of characters
+ Cheap for such a large game

    Cons:
+ Lack of a proper story
    + Sometimes confusing menu

All in all, UMVC3 is a fantastic game for fighting fans and newcomers to the genre. Engaging gameplay and graphics always leave you wanting more. Pick it up!!
